Let’s take our authority back in our businesses and our money, making it as unique, custom and individual as you are
It didn’t work before. It definitely didn’t work during COVID. And it’s still not working now.
Granted I could take this post in a lot of different places… Let’s be real. Not much about life (wherever you are) is likely working with you instead of against you.
But this is about Business. Business as we’ve known it. It never worked, doesn’t work and will never work. That’s not our fault. There’s not an understanding or a system we need to get to “make it work.” It just doesn’t work.

We are NOT the problem here.
Yet business as we know it is the water we swim in. It is what we expect. Because we’ve been TRAINED in it.
And we love people who buck the system. But of course, not too much, because “they might not be credible if they don’t xyz”
For me (and those around me) it was a question of having a website and/or a physical address we could easily find.
But do you really need a website? I know many entrepreneurs doing just fine without a web presence.
Do you really need to have your private/public address out there easily accessible? I actually think now that it might be safer NOT to have it out there.
Without those two items, does it mean that those providers aren’t credible? That they aren’t amazing at their job, their communication, their follow through and that they don’t leave satisfied customers left and right – absolutely not.
It’s how I was trained that those two missing things would make me pause. Then I get mad at myself. All that information is not necessary to have a great business or working relationship. I know that. Not just from people I know but from working first hand with others. None of that is strictly or ever really necessary.
So if that type of training is wrong? What else is there that we can bust?
The “Failures.”
These “failures” – that we hesitate to share with each other or even be honest with ourselves about.
With these “failures”, I will hear someone say “No no no, it’s really bad. Really really bad. I promise, it’s awful.” With me, this is pertaining to bookkeeping or money situations. I promise them that they can’t shock me or surprise me. Plus I really want to know. I really want to help however I can. But I have to know. I know that ANYTHING is fixable – for sure. (From personal experience.) But I can’t help or give ideas if I don’t know.
There is so much shame wrapped up in our business failures – as if they are us. As if they define us as owners, as people.
But really we have all been given the same script to follow – and it works for none of us.
Once we can push past that shame and share, in the light, it might be bad. But it’s really not as bad as the monsters in our head tell us. Instead we spend hours, days, years, decades shaming ourselves and not sharing letting the wound fester and hurt instead of sharing it and cleaning it up and helping us heal faster.
We have been sold this idea that everything should go smoothly and easily according to the one script. Always. No changes. No deviations. (Unless it is good, only if it is good.)
That’s an impossibility. Not in a system that was not built for humans, for life, for a reality that encompasses more than just money.
Once the confession is out and the facts are figured out, suddenly there is hope. You can do something differently. There is somewhere to go, something to do, a plan to make, completely outside “the one size fits all but really doesn’t” plan you did before.
We keep torturing ourselves and feeding the monsters, that it “all worked” for the ever illustrious “them” so why can’t we make it work for us? I guarantee you that it’s NOT working for them. They are just in a better form of denial right now for whatever reason.
We are all not doing the same thing, living the same lives, loving the same people, prioritizing the same things, living with the same disabilities and challenges. The fact that “business” is “all the same” – that’s the abnormality.
It’s not about making yourself fit the mold – but about finally taking this “business system” (and all the systems) and making it work for YOU.
Business should be as colorful, varied and interesting as you. Yeah, there are some practicalities for sure but besides that, it’s all up to you.
